Overview:

This class will be presented as much like a college literature class as is possible in the high school setting. You will also be writing on a daily basis as well. During the first semester, we will focus on British literature and the Graduation Project.  Second semester we will delve into significant literary works from around the world.  There will be relatively few projects or activities. We will read, discuss, and write about literature. You will be responsible for keeping up with assignments and getting homework when you miss a class. I do not accept late work unless there are extenuating circumstances, such as a severe illness, death in the family, or loss of limb. In those circumstances only, for essays and other homework worth 30 points or more, the grade will be reduced by one letter grade per day that it is late.  Other class policies will be discussed on the first day of school.  There is the expectation that you will be taking the AP Literature Exam at the end of the year.

Here are some expectations for the AP Literature student:

• the ability to read accurately
• the ability to engage in intelligent discussion, involving active listening and constructive speaking.
• the desire to learn more than the obvious or superficial
• a sense of personal and social responsibility sufficient to keep up with the individual workload and to contribute meaningfully to group efforts
• the willingness to accept criticism from both the teacher and peers
• the patience to accept a variety of answers or unresolved questions as starting points for further thinking and exploring of ideas in works of literature.
• either a good basic command of language or the willingness to work hard to catch up with students who possess that skill.
