How to Answer a Lit Question

How to Answer a Literature Question.

1. Answer the question in a complete sentence – using the
question as part of the answer.
Ex. What is the importance of symbolism in The Crane?
Answer: The importance of symbolism in The Crane is…..

2. After your sentence, use a quote [a quote is ANY sentence
written in the text, NOT just dialogue] from the text to prove your
answer. Use quotation marks around the quote and at the end put
the author’s name and the page number in parentheses.
Ex. “The sun was my heart and blazed with indignation” (Jones
32).

3. After the quote, write a sentence or two that explains how the
quote supports your answer.
Ex. The sun is a symbol of the character’s heart which was broken
by her loss. The symbol is important because it allows the reader
to understand her rage.
